Plaza Blanca or "White Place"

There are many ways to enjoy the vibrant fall colors in northern New Mexico. Here is one suggestion guaranteed to provide an enchanting northern New Mexico experience. This road trip includes four destinations within the Chama River valley. Google map links have been included.

Plaza Blanca

First stop is Plaza Blanca, the "White Place." These white cliffs are east of Abiquiu near the Dar Al Islam Education Center and Mosque. Although located on private land, hikers are welcome.

Ghost Ranch

Continue 15 miles northwest along Hwy 84, past Abiquiu Lake and you will see the exit for Ghost Ranch on your right. This education and retreat center was made famous by Georgia O'Keeffe who resided here and painted the breathtaking landscape that surrounds the property. Hiking trails are open to the public. Be sure to check in at the Welcome Center.

Abiquiu

Return via Hwy 84 and stop in Abiquiu for lunch at Cafe Abiquiu.

Ojo Caliente

Last stop is Ojo Caliente Hot Springs via Hwy 554 and El Rito. You will eventually intersect HWY 285. Turn right, drive a short distance and look for the sign on your right. Soak in the various pools or choose a spa treatment (reservations needed). Relax. It's been a long day.
